Habit of Mind: Managing ImpulsivityFrom the PrincipalThe excitement built throughout the week, as we awaited the arrival of our very special guests. As you know, yesterday we welcomed Kari Miller, 2008 silver medalist on the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team and training to compete in the London 2012 Paralympics, and Diane Simpson-Bundy, a member of the USA Gymnastic Hall of Fame, to speak to our entire student body. In addition to sharing their accomplishments and amazing athletic skills, their stories emphasized the need for perseverance, determination, and resiliency. Both of these incredible athletes embody the Olympic “habits” we work to instill in our students each day. In addition to leaving us with hope and inspiration, our speakers presented our school with a autographed Olympic flag, and provided every student and staff member with a USA water bottle. We are so appreciative of the time they took to spend the day with us and for the lessons learned. We look forward to staying CONNECTED with them through future Service Learning projects. Be sure to check out our school’s link and watch it grow in the months to come! And speaking of CONNECTED….on November 17th, our librarian, Sally Schoenberg, arranged a Skype visit with Jody Feldman, author of the Reading Rally book, The Gollywhopper Games. More than 40 fourth grade students voluntarily gave up their recess in order to participate. They prepared questions in advance, during library class, and were excited to ask: “If you had the chance to play Gollywhopper Games, would you do it? and “Did you write a lot as a kid?” The enthusiasm was contagious! Thank you to all who stopped by school this week to pick up a holiday wish list for the families at our sister school, Carmen Buckner. If you missed out on that opportunity, but still would like to participate it’s not too late! Please read the P.T.A. notes below to learn how you can purchase a Jewel gift card and/or donate warm hats and mittens. All donations will be accepted throughout the week we return to school. Thank you, in advance, for your continued generosity! Enjoy the week ahead as you spend time with family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving to all~ Dr. Welter From the P.T.A.Friday, Dec. 2nd is Spirit Day – Students are invited and encouraged to show their school spirit by participating in the next spirit day, “Concert Day,” by wearing clothing that has the name or picture of anything musically related. Share the Joy! Share the Feast! It’s not too late to help the children and families of Carman-Buckner Elementary. Please consider purchasing a Jewel gift card or donating new hats and/or mittens to help families in need. Although Carman-Buckner is only 25 miles away, more than 90% of the families live below the federal poverty level. Purchasing a gift card is now easier than ever – you can pay using Pay Pal by going to www.mckenziepta.com or drop off a check (in increments of $25) in the Sharing Committee mailbox in the school office. Hats and mittens can be dropped off in the McKenzie lobby. Donations will be accepted through November 29th. Questions? Contact Joan Criswell-Merrilees at joancriswell [at] me [dot] com.
