HABIT of MIND: Thinking InterdependentlyFrom the PrincipalDear McKenzie Families, Just when we thought the Groundhog was wrong……it looks like there really will be at least six more weeks of winter! Today’s snow added to the excitement of the 100th day of school. Primary grades celebrated by bringing collections of 100 items, while our intermediate grades estimated to the hundredth place and wrote expository text with hundreds of words! I visited a first grade classroom today where students were asked to make a list of the things they’ve heard their parents say at least one hundred times…..I’m sure you can imagine the fun they had writing and even more their teacher and I had in reading them! We continue to find numerous ways in which to teach the habit of thinking interdependently. Our teachers masterfully arrange learning opportunities throughout the day for students to learn with and from one another. Learning how to lead as well as follow and working toward shared outcomes are skills for success–not only in school but also in life. McKenzie’s recent service learning project, “No Birthday Cake”, gave our students a hands-on experience in thinking and working interdependently as many of our students spent their recess today decorating and filling over 150 birthday bags to donate to the local food pantry. The energy and excitement they drew from one another was nothing short of amazing! While the bags are just about ready to deliver, we find ourselves in need of some additional items to make all the bags complete. Anyone interested in donating a box of cake mix, can of frosting, or a package of birthday candles can drop them in the birthday collection box found in the school lobby. Thank you, again, for helping us teach our students such a valuable lesson! It was wonderful to see so many McKenzie families and staff at last Saturday night’s Benefit. What an amazing event! A very special thanks to co-chairs Rebecca Leiber and Emily Zivin, for their tireless work over the past 8-10 months, as well as the many people who contributed their time and talents. A great time was had by all! And best of all, your generous donations will enable us to provide many enriching learning experiences for your children in the years to come.
