Fourth graders visited Shedd Aquarium. The students participated in the Habitat Design Science Tech Trek. On their trek, small groups of students each chose an exhibit to study. The groups observed the activities of the animals in their chosen exhibit, studied the other elements of the exhibit, and contemplated how the other elements of the exhibit helped the animals in the exhibit. After completing this first stage, the students learned about what hermit crabs need to survive. The students then designed habitats for the hermit crabs that would meet the crabs’ needs for survival, such as fresh water for drinking.
In addition to the Habitat Design Tech Trek, the fourth graders watched the Shedd Aquarium Aquatic show, featuring dolphins, a penguin and even a dog. The students had fun visiting seeing a range of animals such as the sharks in the Wild Reef exhibit, penguins, sea otters, beluga whales, turtles and of course, fish.
