Outdoor Classroom — Parent Volunteers
Outdoor Classroom is a time when McKenzie students can enjoy the gardens during recess time on Mondays and Fridays in the fall and spring.
Parent volunteers supervise the children as they explore, draw, or work in the gardens. Examples of activities include:
- Drawing pictures of trees and flowers
- Weeding in the gardens
- Mixing up the compost
- Digging up dandelions and planting grass seed
- Watering different areas
- Painting pictures
- Counting insects
- Looking for worms
- Identifying plants vs. weeds
- Identifying insects
Exciting things are happening in the gardens
- A split rail fence was installed in Fall, 2009 to designate outdoor classroom space.
- Two river birch trees were planted in April, 2010 in honor of Arbor Day.
- Our fourth grade class of 2010 completed their class gift to the school– planting flowers and grasses along the fence.
- An arbor and one smoke bush espalier were planted in late May, 2010.
- Raised garden beds were constructed in August, 2010.
- A path and council ring were installed to create a gathering space for classes in September, 2010.
- Our fourth grade class of 2011 planted bulbs throughout the garden in October, 2010
- Benches and tables will be added in the fall of 2011.
