Yearbook Cover Art Contest
The McKenzie yearbook cover art contest starts Friday, November 1 and ends Friday, November 15. Using the official cover contest entry form and a black ballpoint or Sharpie, your children can create a drawing inspired by their favorite McKenzie place, activity or teacher, then submit their art at the school office. Fourth graders will vote on their favorites and the top five submissions are published on the yearbook cover. Many more entries are published within the pages of the yearbook! Download an official entry form at mckenziepta.com.
Junior Great Books
Do you want your child to experience the enjoyment of reading and discussing outstanding literature in a stimulating but relaxed environment? If so, enroll your child in Junior Great Books! In JGB, students read stories and share their ideas and opinions in small discussion groups. The literature has been especially chosen to challenge children of all ages, to spark their ideas, and to promote thoughtful discussion. Parent volunteers trained in the Great Books Foundation’s Shared Inquiry method lead discussions. Shared Inquiry makes it possible for all children, regardless of reading level, to contribute with confidence and learn from one another. JGB will meet once a week for 8 weeks (Jan – Mar) during lunch/recess. Your child will need to bring a peanut free lunch from home that day. Online registration at mckenziepta.com is November 1 – November 10, 2013. Space is limited and the fee per child is $40.00. Questions, please contact Renee Lau at firstname.lastname@example.org or Yoojin Choi at email@example.com
Fall Conference Dinner for Teachers on November 7, 2013
On Thursday, November 7, 2013, our teachers will be at school from early morning until late evening for fall parent/teacher conferences. Let’s treat our McKenzie teachers to a soup & salad dinner break during their busy conference schedule. The donation response has been wonderful but help is still needed – just a few spots are available on the Sign Up Genius: http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/9040E4BADAB2E5-fall All food items should be brought to the Staff Lounge by 3:45 p.m. on November 7th. Please bring soup or chili in a crock pot to keep warm. Power strips and extension cords will be provided. Please be sure to transport your soup safely; tape or otherwise secure the lid of your crock pot in order to avoid spills in your car. Thank you for providing a yummy dinner for our teachers!
Last Chance to Order Spiritwear this Year!
Share the Warmth. Share the Joy. Share the Feast
Share the Warmth. A collection is now underway for new or gently used closed-toe shoes, school uniforms (navy bottoms & white tops), and outerwear (jackets, sweatshirts and hoodies) for students at our sister school, Carmen Buckner. Sizes 5-14 are needed most. A Sharing Committee collection bin is located in the main lobby for these items. Thank you for your generosity. Share the Joy. Share the magic of the holidays with the students of Carmen Buckner. Select a child to sponsor on our Star Pick-Up Days, November 11th, 12th and 13th, from 8:45-9:15 a.m. and 2:45-3:15 p.m. in the school lobby. Shop for a gift (or two!) off the child’s wish list to purchase, wrap and return on Monday, December 2nd. This year, there’s another wonderful way to Share the Joy, too: purchase a $20 toy for a Holiday Shop, where Carmen Buckner parents will be able to select their own gifts for their children. Gift donations for the Holiday Shop should not be wrapped and should be returned to a collection bin in the lobby anytime throughout the week of December 2nd. Thank you for your generosity. Share the Feast. Provide groceries for families in need at Carmen Buckner. Jewel gift cards will be available for purchase on the Star Pick-Up Days (November 11th-13th) in $50 or $100 denominations. Contributions in smaller amounts may also be made and applied toward a gift card. Gift cards may be purchased with cash or check. Thank you for your generosity!

McKenzie Benefit 2014
The McKenzie Benefit Needs You! The McKenzie Benefit, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” will be held on February 1, 2014 at Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette. The Benefit Committee needs your help today! Here are things you can do: 1. Volunteer to organize your class gift. Each classroom can donate a creative “handmade” gift to be bid on at the auction, make a donation to our wine wall, or assemble a basket of goods. 2. Host a McKenzie Mingles party. Find some friends or couples at McKenzie to host with you. Some ideas include: Wine Tasting party, paddle tennis party, Mom’s yoga or Zumba party, Dad’s poker or BBQ night. These parties have the potential to raise significant funds at the auction! Donate an auction item. Do you have tickets to a sporting/theatre/concert event? Could you donate airline miles or a night at a hotel (downtown, Kohler, Grand Geneva)? Do you own a vacation home? If so, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help in any area. We’d love to hear from you!
